Model Citizen: Amy Ferguson
Next to your birthday, today should be one of the most important days of the year for you! Why? It’s Election Day! This is one of the only opportunities Americans have to make their voices be heard. Yesterday, I had the delight and pleasure of sitting down with a woman on a mission to give back to her community in a meaningful way.
Meet Amy Ferguson, a candidate for Boone County Clerk! Amy has been actively serving in the area as a member of the Boone County Service Unit for 7 years. She’s now ready to take on a more direct and active role to make sure that tax payers in Boone county are always able to know what’s going on with their voices being heard in the form of their votes.
When I met with Amy, I couldn’t help but notice how kind, and warm her demeanor was. It was also very evident that there’s something very capable and confident about the way she is approaching campaigning and running for this office. She’s got a job to do, and she means business.
When asked why she has set her sights on county clerk position, she thoughtfully responded that she was tired of seeing no other choices for the position on Boone County’s ballot. She said that the 2016 elections woke her up. Amy was compelled to do more because of the anger and frustration she felt and also saw from her fellow Americans. She chose to channel those feelings into action. Amy is confident that she can offer courses of action, that she feels the office has yet to see.
She’s passionate about keeping the County Clerk’s office transparent and accountable. She also wants to ensure that documents are easier for taxpayers to access, so they can see where the offices efforts are being directed and know what’s going on. If elected, Amy says she is focused on making sure that the elections are secure, and that the process of them are fair and safe. She is also hoping to start an initiative that would help educate local high school seniors about their local government in a more direct way.
Concerns about voter turnout was also discussed. According to Amy, 3 out of 4 Boone County residents are expected to sit out the elections today. Statewide, it’s 1 in 3. Concerning stats, for sure. She wants to listen to citizens and find out what may be hindering them from voting.
When asked her thoughts on potential voters who feel like their vote won’t count, especially when looking at the 2016 elections, where the numbers were clearly favorable to the candidate who lost, Amy reminded me that though more may have voted for the losing candidate, many more didn’t vote at all.
So there ya have it folks, bundle up, and head out to the polls. No matter who you vote for Amy is just glad to know that you’re exercising your American right to VOTE.
